Marlene Housner: artStudio

News Release (Foxboro, Mass.): March, 2024

In 1995, Housner relocated to New Mexico where the vast landscape inspired new creative initiatives for Marlene that veered between painting, works on paper, and fiber/art to wear. This stimulated productivity: a cross-pollination between triple pursuits, culminatinating in splendid exhibits in Durango, Colorado; Santa Fe, New Mexico; and many open studio tours.

After returning to New England in 2000, the New Mexico quartets were exhibited at: St. John’s University, Queens, NY; the Coutts Memorial Museum of Art in Kansas; and then a solo exhibit in Newton, MA entitled "AERIAL Tableaux".

During the last 15 years, using her painter's revisionist eye, Marlene has also turned her attention to fiber; constructing an impressive collection of ceremonial artwearables that have a dual function as one-of-a-kind fashion apparel as well as sumptuous wall/installation pieces.

There is a synergy at play here. The artistic intent, as represented in the REtroSPECTIVE at UMass-Amherst in spring 2015, is aptly described by Housner: "It is the reciprocity between painting & apparel that is most exciting. One yearns to engage in this interaction which has been abundantly generative. Arriving at a dynamic balance between the predictable and that of the Unexpected."
